This flux ring looks somewhat like a radiator, welded onto the bottom of each pot or pan. It works like a radiator in reverse to transfer the heat to the pot faster, and in a more evenly distributed manner. You can use a regular pan, but it will take much longer to cook, and you will use significantly more fuel. If you camp a lot, the fuel cost savings will easily pay for the pan.
